Sharjah airport unveils perishables facility
Supreme Group has established a perishables facility at the Freight Center at Sharjah International Airport. The 3,428-square-meter center enables goods en route to Afghanistan from the United Arab Emirates to be stored in a temperature-controlled space, instead of dry ice.
Supreme Group currently operates two daily freight flights into Afghanistan, although company representatives said more routes could be announced if demand increases.
“Even at our peak, with 22 flights in one week, the chilled facility was able to easily meet the extra demand, so clearly we have the capacity to grow this arm of the business and handle third-party cargo,” Aviation Managing Director Charlie Szar said in a statement.
Key commodities addressed by this new center include fruits, vegetables, and dairy and meat products. Szar envisions the warehouse catering to other sectors in the future, as well. “This facility not only improves the quality of our outgoing food supplies, but also it allows us to potentially transport other goods, such as pharmaceuticals,” he said.
Fortunately, capacity is not an issue. The chilled facility, which is manned around the clock, can hold approximately 650 tri-wall boxes at any given time, a Supreme Group spokesman said. It is also designed to expedite packing, loading and shipping.
What’s more, the facility’s castor deck flooring enables packed tri-walls to be rolled to the dispatch dock and transferred to the carrier. “We can basically just push the cargo out of the chiller and onto the aircraft,” Szar said.
The facility currently handles approximately 5,000 tonnes of perishables per month.
