Manfred Körtgen, managing director of operations at Berlin Airports, anticipates Berlin Brandenburg Airport improving Germany’s financial health tremendously. “Even now, in its construction phase, Berlin Brandenburg Airport is acting as the engine driving the region’s economy,” he said in a statement.
“From June 2012, 20,000 people will be employed at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, making it the largest workplace in the region,” Körtgen continued.
Preparing Berlin Brandenburg Airport to handle such growth has been no small task, however. More than 5,500 employees are currently working around the clock to finish construction of the airport, with Brandenburg Airport’s terminals, road connections and special operations facilities mostly complete.
The next operational phase, which will last from February until May, involves the dry-run testing of airport procedures by up to 10,000 people. April is also a critical month for Berlin Brandenburg Airport, as it will begin receiving equipment and systems from Tegel and Schönefeld airports.
The airports currently serving Berlin won’t shut down for good until the evening of June 2. Airberlin and Lufthansa will commence flight operations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport the following morning.
