The low-cost carrier flydubai will launch flydubai Cargo on January 1, offering routings to the carrier’s current 46 destinations and adding services to India and Pakistan. The carrier expects to fly about 1,500 tonnes of cargo per month on a Boeing 737-800 NG; more than half the cargo will be transit freight.
Showing support for IATA’s e-freight initiatives, shipments will be completed using electronic documents, according to a company press release. flydubai Cargo will handle a range of goods, but auto parts from Dubai, craft items from Kathmandu and vegetables from around the region are expected to make up the majority of the cargo.
“Not only is it unusual for a low-cost carrier to have a cargo division, it is also rare for an airline as young as flydubai,” Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, said in a statement. “But it is initiatives such as this that set us apart and ensure we continue to lead the way in low cost aviation, while also supporting Dubai’s position as a logistics hub.”
