The Week in brief
Korean Air has acquired a 747-8F and a 777F from Boeing, making it the world’s first carrier to operate both freighters. Korean plans to fly the 747-8F on its transpacific route from Japan to the U.S., while the 777F will be deployed on new European routes, according to a press release.
United Airlines and Continental Airlines experienced an 11.9 percent, year-over-year, drop in freight revenue in January. Consolidated passenger traffic also dipped last month for these carriers, decreasing 3.2 percent from January 2011.
LAN Airlines’ cargo numbers for January showed a 2.1-percent traffic increase and a 3.6-percent capacity increase over the same time period in 2010. Load factor decreased 1 point to 65.4 percent, year over year. According to a company press release, “traffic and capacity grew due to the arrival of one new Boeing 767F freighter in January 2011, assigned to boost growth in the Latin American, United States West Coast and Mexican markets.”
KLM will increase its B747-400 services between Amsterdam and Paramaribo to four times a week between June 25 and September 10.
