DHL has opened a 26,000-square-meter warehouse facility to serve as the central hub in Italy for the integrator’s Freight and Global Forwarding divisions. According to a press release announcing the move, 500 workers will staff the new location. The location is expected to see 85 arrivals and 205 departures by air each week. DHL has also reduced emissions at the new location by 18 percent. “Our new logistics center is ideally situated in the strategically important region east of Milan, and provides the best infrastructure for air and sea transport in Italy. With dedicated areas for our specialized services, we are reinforcing our strategy to focus on the specific logistics needs of our various key industry sectors,” DHL’s Thomas Nieszner said in a statement.Delta Air Lines flew 211,532 tonnes of cargo in March, a 3.2 percent, year-over-year, loss. Delta is also down from a year-to-date perspective, transporting 571,123 tonnes of freight from January to March; the carrier flew 587,933 tonnes of cargo during the same period in 2011.Thai Airways will launch its first Boeing 747-400 retrofitted cargo freighter into service on April 12. Saudi Airlines Cargo will launch a third weekly B747 freighter service to Dhaka, Bangladesh, on April 14. With the new flight, the carrier’s weekly capacity to the market will top 450 tonnes.Cargolux’s maintenance and engineering divisions have received ISO 14001 certification, which measures the carrier’s compliance with environmental laws and the effective implementation of an environmental management system. The carrier’s flight operations division has been certified under ISO 14001 since 2009.
