The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines responded to the European Commission publishing new proposals Oct. 16 to extend the EU Emissions Trading Scheme to all flights within EU airspace.
“We view this development with concern. The inclusion of international airlines without the consent of their respective governments is likely to meet with strong opposition, particularly from major developing countries. This runs counter to the substance and spirit of the agreement reached earlier this month at the ICAO 38th Assembly,” Andrew Herdman, AAPA director general, said. “We cannot afford to jeopardize the good progress that has been made in reaching a consensus on the development of a global market-based measure to be implemented by 2020. That’s where our collective efforts should be focused.”
