First flight of 747-8 freighter

Boeing says the first flight of its delayed 747-8 program will be on Feb. 8 with a freighter destined for Cargolux later this year.

Following a cancellation of two units by Guggenheim, Boeing now has 76 orders for the freighter version from Cargolux, Nippon Cargo Airlines, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, Atlas Air, Cathay Pacific, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, Emirates SkyCargo, Guggenheim and Korean Air.

Boeing's current cargo forecast suggests the world's freighter fleet will nearly double to 3,892 units by 2027. While nearly 75 percent will come from modified passenger and combi airplanes, the manufacturer expects 863 new freighters will enter airline fleets in the next 17 years. Not surprisingly, the company thinks the orders will be for large aircraft.

On Jan.28 Boeing announced a reorganization of its commercial airplane division under new president and CEO Jim Albaugh: "Our priorities for 2010 and beyond are clear," Albaugh said. "We must execute on our development programs; we must continue to perform on our ongoing production programs; and in this increasingly competitive world, we must develop a clear vision and roadmap for both the single-aisle and twin-aisle marketplaces."
