Gullwing takes flight with DHL
First launched in 1954, the latest Gullwing can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 197 mph. An electric-powered version will go on sale in 2013
Daimler has entrusted DHL Global Forwarding with delivering its new Mercedes-Benz sports car, the AMG SLS Gullwing, to some 40 locations worldwide.
The division is using a patented “Customized Car Safety Box” developed for prototypes and luxury cars to handle and store the cars.
The box, useful for both ocean and air shipments, has a hot-dip galvanized steel platform, a suspended aluminum hood, a special ramp for vehicles with low ground clearance, interior thermal insulation, additional doors and an integrated, manually operated rope winch.
The Gullwing has just gone on sale in India with a reported price of 10.8 million rupees ($227,000). According to Joachim Schmidt, executive vice president sales and marketing for Mercedes-Benz, the market for luxury cars is a good one. “We expect India’s premium segment to grow more rapidly than the market as a whole in the coming years,” he said.
