Relief Arrives For Homeless
As Indonesia was hit by another earthquake last week that measured 6.7 on the Richter scale, Volga-Dnepr completed a series of freighter flights carrying 391 tonnes of relief goods to victims of an earlier disaster in Pedang.
Following the earthquake on Sept.30 that killed more than 1,000 people, impacted a further 1,250,000 and damaged 275,000 houses, Swiss-based NGO Medair reports "a remarkable response" with as many as 190 international NGOs arriving in Padang to assess the damage and provide assistance.
Mark Wooding, Medair’s Reconstruction Advisor added, “My concern is that after all the noise and the action, maybe not enough will have been achieved through this initial response."
For the past few weeks, Volga-Dnepr has operated from Kuala Lumpur to Padang and delivered water tanks, tents, blankets and generators to the affected region.
The epicenter of the latest earthquake was was 830 miles east of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, on the island of Java.
