Lufthansa Cargo adds new routes

Lufthansa Cargo has added three new routes

On March 27, Lufthansa Cargo will start flying to Shenzhen, China; Kolkata, Calcutta; and Barcelona using MD-11s. The carrier's joint-venture partner, Aerologic, will offer connections from Lufthansa's Frankfurt hub to Houston and Lahore.

“We will now be serving more than 20 cities in Asia direct with our freighters and expanding our position in the world’s major air cargo market," Dr. Andreas Otto of Lufthansa Cargo said in a statement.

Lufthansa will institute thrice-weekly China flights and two flights to Calcutta every Thursday and Saturday. The carrier intends to fly to Barcelona every Thursday, Saturday and Monday.

Lufthansa already has a presence in Shenzhen because of its stake in Jade Cargo, which is based there, but the flights to Spain and India are entirely new services.

All Aerologic's flights are planned for once a week.

Lufthansa Cargo also recently announced the winners of its Cargo Climate Care Award, which is given to "young researchers, customers and staff for innovative ideas aimed at making airfreight more climate-friendly," according to a company statement.

GmbH took home the customer prize, and a Lufthansa Cargo employee from Tel Aviv won an award for developing a recycling system. Two prizes of €5,000 each went to Dr. Bernd Oberwinkler of Austria and the Munich-based research team of Lucas Burgey, Joseph Geier and Erwin Köber.
