More Fines For Dutch & French
In the latest round of cargo price fixing trials that has cost airlines hundreds of millions of dollars, The Canadian Competition Bureau (CCB) has fined Air France, KLM and Martinair Can$10 million.
Air France will pay Can$4 million; KLM will pay Can$5 million and Martinair Can$1 million. The carriers admitted to price fixing rates from Canada between April 2002 and February 2006. The CCB estimates the total was Can$31.5 million.
"The cooperation of these parties through the Bureau’s leniency program will assist in our ongoing conspiracy investigation," said Melanie L. Aitken, Interim Commissioner of Competition. "Had these companies not cooperated, the Bureau would have recommended harsher penalties against these companies, including significantly higher fines."
Under Section 45 of the Canada Competition Act, each airline could have been fined up to Can$10 million and or face a five-year jail term.
