Continental Burns Green

As Continental Airlines awaits U.S. Congressional approval for increased airline alliances, it says the results of a January ‘09 biofuel test flight, in partnership with Boeing and GE, shows a biofuel blend performed better than traditional jet fuel.

The airline says a 50:50 biofuel/Jet A1 blend produced a one percent increase in fuel efficiency over traditional jet fuel.

Continental estimates the overall life cycle greenhouse gas emissions with this blend would be reduced 60 - 80 percent compared to traditional jet fuel.

The Continental flight was the first biofuel demonstration by a commercial carrier in North America, the first sustainable biofuel demonstration flight by a commercial carrier using a two-engine aircraft, and the first biofuel demonstration flight by a commercial carrier using fuel partially derived from algae.
