UPS Makes Carbon Disclosure Difference

Louisville-based UPS has earned the distinction of being the only transportation company from the Standard & Poor’s 500 list to make the 2008 Carbon Disclosure Project’s Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.

"Our employees take pride in our commitment to being a socially and environmentally responsible company," Bob Stoffel, UPS senior vice president of strategy, sustainability, engineering and environmental affairs, said in a release last week trumpeting its leadership in carbon disclosure.

Companies selected to appear in the CDLI demonstrate the highest level of transparency and disclosure on climate change, according to the Carbon Disclosure Project’s web site. Of the 300 S&P companies that responded to the request, less than 20 percent are recognized in the Index.

"Good corporate governance in respect of climate change disclosure will inevitably reap its rewards," said Paul Dickinson, chief executive of the Carbon Disclosure Project. He added, "As carbon regulation increases, those companies that have implemented climate change-related strategies are clearly going to be in a far better position to meet the challenge of higher carbon prices than companies that have procrastinated. Good disclosure practices are synonymous with good management."
