Boeing Selects Telair International

Boeing has selected Telair International to supply the cargo-handling system for the new Boeing 747-8 freighter.

The German supplier, a subsidiary of Teleflex, will provide the systems for the main deck and lower hold of the 747-8, similar to those found on many older 747 fleets operating today worldwide, said the company.

"Telair's knowledge of, and track record with, cargo-handling systems make it the right choice as a supplier for the 747-8," said Michael Teal, deputy chief project engineer for the program.

Telair President Axel Hauner said the news enhances the company's long-standing relationship with Boeing. The supplier worked on the 747 and

767 programs and on freighter conversions.

In 2005, Telair won the contract to develop the unique cargo handling system for a fleet of modified conversions. This latest contract is an extension of the technology.

The cargo-handling system for the 747-8 freighter will feature "intelligent" power drive units networked through a control system, which allows them to communicate with one another. The system is expected to promote safety during the loading and unloading of goods from the aircraft.

The 747-8 freighter is expected to come to market in late 2009. Robert W.
