Cargolux Orders New Boeing Freighters

Cargolux, Europe's largest all-cargo airline, ordered two new Boeing 747-400F aircraft for delivery in the summers of 2007 and 2008.

The two new planes will expand the Cargolux fleet to 16 of the 400 series of freighters. The order replaces a cancelled order for one used freighter that had been scheduled for the end of 2006.

Cargolux will replace its entire fleet of 747-400F aircraft in a step-by-step program starting with the introduction of Boeing's latest design, the larger 747-8, in 2009. Cargolux will be the first customer for that model with firm orders already announced for 10 aircraft and purchase rights for an additional 10 units.

"The 747 Freighters play an important part in our business model," said Ulrich Ogiermann, president and CEO of Cargolux. "The performance level of the 747- 400 freighter within our worldwide network is a cornerstone of our results these last years. With the introduction of the 747-8F freighter by the end of 2009, Cargolux will enter a new area of increased operational efficiency, of further improved environmental performance and of an enlarged potential for better products to benefit our customers."
