The disposition of the U.S. mail and other cargo in the Hawaiian Islands is in doubt Tuesday after bankrupt Aloha Airlines negotiated through the night with the Air Line Pilots Association to decide which pilots still have jobs.
The airline shut down passenger operations on March 31 and laid off approximately 2,000 employees, including some senior pilots. The union wants pilots with seniority to remain with the cargo division, which will go on operating if it can keep the financial backing of primary lender General Motors Acceptance Corp. Any further cash for daily operations from GMAC depends on settling the pilot dispute.
A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. local time (3:30 p.m. EDT).
