Lufthansa Cargo will raise its fuel surcharge, effective May 8, from .50 to .55 euro per kilo of actual freight weight.
The increase follows a pattern of increases in the air cargo industry as the cost of jet fuel soared over $2 per gallon last week. The Lufthansa fuel index has been over its threshold for two consecutive weeks, spurring an automatic surcharge increase. The index was at 362 on April 7and in the last two weeks has risen to 399.
The index is at its highest level since the spike in fuel prices last fall pushed the index up to 417 in October. If it remains above 390 for another week, another .05 euro increase in the surcharge would be indicated.
