Air Canada lost $283.8 million in the first quarter, due primarily to a provision for cargo price fixing investigations.
The $123.2 million provision was not the only problem, though. Another $87.7 million was lost in relation to currency exchange. Strictly focusing on operations, the company was $11.8 million in the red, but that was an improvement upon the $76.8 million operating loss a year ago.
Government authorities in the United States, Canada and Europe are looking into alleged anti-competitive pricing by several airlines. Pending class action law suits in the United States and Canada also name Air Canada as a defendant.
