Although the fire May 24 at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport (see earlier story) completely destroyed all cargo facilities, some airlines are relocating and continuing operations at the airport.
The fire apparently began in a section containing fuel depots, near a hangar housing military aircraft. Faulty electrical wiring may have been the cause, a Turkish official said. Terrorism is not suspected.
Lufthansa's warehouse facilities were totally wiped out, and the handling offices were partly damaged and can not be used. Lufthansa relocated its offices to the sales office, which was not affected. Since Wednesday evening, the export and import acceptance of Lufthansa Cargo is being handled in two warehouses -- export at the airport, import close to the airport. An embargo which was imposed at short notice yesterday has been lifted. Bookings for export and import will be accepted without any restrictions.
