Scott Kalitta, the 46-year-old son of cargo airline owner Connie Kalitta, died Saturday in a drag racing accident in Englishtown, N.J.
Scott Kalitta was one of the most popular racers in the National Hot Rod Association and his family has long had a prominent role in the sport. Connie Kalitta, owner of Michigan-based 747 freighter operator Kalitta Air, is considered a legend in racing niche and Doug Kalitta, Scott Kalitta's cousin, is a sprint car champion.
Scott Kalitta was killed Saturday during a qualifying race at New Jersey's Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Footage of the crash showed Kalitta's Toyota Solara burst into flames about halfway through the straight sprint and then burst through a sand trap and over a wall before exploding.
In addition to his father, Kalitta is survived by his wife and two sons.
