Air cargo traffic for U.S. airlines dropped in May in both domestic and international operations.
During the month, U.S. carriers flew just under 2 million revenue ton miles, 3.8 percent less than the same period last year, according to the Air Transport Association.
Domestic traffic fell 5.6 percent including a 16.9 percent decline in mail ton miles and a 4.9 percent drop in freight and express traffic.
International traffic was off 2.0 percent from last year's totals. All regions were in negative territory with service to Latin America scoring the biggest decline, off 6.5 percent from the same period last year. Trans-Atlantic operations were down 1.7 percent and Trans-Pacific 1.4 percent.
Altogether, the airlines have posted a bare 1.0 percent year over year traffic gain for the first five months of the year.
