Smiths Detection Claims Cargo Screening Wins

The Transportation Security Administration has added Smiths Detection’s HISCAN 100100T-2is X-ray system to its list of approved air cargo screening technologies, the New Jersey-based company says.

With seven cargo screening systems now on the TSA list, Smiths said it offers airlines, freight forwarders and indirect carriers more approved solutions than any other company. Its cargo screening solutions include explosives trace detectors and X-ray systems.

Mark Laustra, Vice President of Homeland Security, Smiths Detection, said, “Our market-leading security solutions enable the screening of air cargo from break-bulk small packages to large pallets.”

The first phase of the U.S. mandate requiring 50 percent of air cargo on passenger aircraft to be screened took effect in February 2009 with the stricter 100 percent level set to begin in August 2010.

In other news, Smiths Detection announced contracts totaling more than $20 million to provide automatic explosives detection equipment and checkpoint X-ray security solutions at Qatar’s New Doha International Airport, which is currently under construction.

The security system integration project is scheduled to be completed by late 2011, the company said.
